The defending state champion Mustangs had a balance of timely hitting and outstanding pitching to shut out the Lobos in the season opener for both teams. "We had good command of our pitches, and we also hit the ball well," Delta coach Reed Peters said. "We have a lot of returning players, so it should be another fun year." Five Delta pitchers combined to allow a total of five hits, striking out a total of 16 and walking three. Starting pitcher Robert Gasser went three innings and struck out six, and Kevin Kyle went the next three and struck out five. The Mustangs outhit Monterey Peninsula 7-5, with Dillon Tatum going 2 for 4 with a solo homer and two RBI for Delta. Anthony Lucchetti hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs.
