Starting Winter Strong

Starting Winter Strong
Tipping off the start of the 2022-23 basketball season the Mustangs men's basketball team will head to Cabrillo this weekend led by their returning all-league backcourt.

"We have two returning guards (Dayton Magana and Kendrick Curry) that were first-team all-league that bring experience and should lead the team," said head coach Rich Ressa during the final days of preparation for the start of the season.

Dayton Magana and Kendrick Curry were both named to the Big 8 Conference first team last season while Magana was also named as the league co-MVP.

"I'm excited for the season to start," said Magana. "I want to try and accomplish what I did last season and even more this season not just for myself but for the team as well. Our strength really is our chemistry and how close we are as a team."

Also back this season is Christian Cuevas and Cameron Malone this season with the remainder of their roster being freshmen.

"We need to pay big even though we are small," said Ressa about a roster that doesn't have the same amount of size as they had last season. "Our staff does a fantastic job recruiting talent that is right for us. We have some guys that have very high ceilings that we are excited to see how well they grow over the year."

"Every year we want to be playing our best basketball in March and playing better than the sum of our parts. We want to be overachieving come the end of February."

The start of that journey is on Saturday in Cabrillo against Gavilan. Their first home game is on Friday, November 11th at 4:00 pm against Canada. All regular season home games this season will have free admission.
