Perfect weather for some Water Polo
With this week's temperatures being nearly record highs it is a great time for the Delta men's water polo team to be in a swimming pool and get their season underway which they will this weekend playing in a tournament at West Valley College.

"We are ready to go," said head coach Mike Maroney. "We will have quite a strong group of returning guys and are very excited about some new freshmen coming in."

While their roster size won't have as many players as they had hoped they will have several key returning players from last year's six-win season including goalies Jon Horton and Connor Johnson. Benton Peterson also returns to play his sophomore season as he played with the Mustangs in 2019 and led the team that year in goals with 35.

"We had summer classes that were in full force and have had a much more regular start than compared to last year," said Maroney. "Still find a bit of hurt from the lag of the last two years of Covid affecting both the high school and club programs."

"It's a smaller freshmen class than we were anticipating but it's a great group of guys coming in. Trenton Worden out of Oregon looks to come in and be a big-time scorer for us. David Imeri is not from a high school water program and he had no water polo background but he took a class over the summer and we introduced him to water polo and he picked it up quickly and just loved it."

After their season-opening tournament on the road this weekend the Mustangs will play their home opener on Friday, September 16th when they host a tournament at Delta College.

All home athletic events this season will have free admission.
