Women’s soccer continues to rewrite the record books

Women’s soccer continues to rewrite the record books

By Paul Muyskens

As the regular season comes to an end with two home games this week the Delta College women's soccer team has a chance to make program history on Tuesday afternoon as they are one win away from clinching their first-ever Big 8 Conference championship.

Coming off of a 2018 season that saw them win 19 games and make the state championship for the first time in program history, the Mustangs have continued to rewrite the record books this year as they have broken the program record for wins during the regular season with 18 and consecutive wins with their currently active winning streak of 13 games.

Returning home after four straight shutout road wins the Mustangs are now 18-0-2 on the season and have not allowed a goal in 16 of their 20 games. Goalkeepers Marcella Salyer and Callie Crain, who often each play half of the game, have combined for the 16 shutouts which is a new program record for shutouts in a season. With just five goals allowed on the season, only one coming during the run of play, the team is also on pace to set a program record for fewest goals allowed in a season which currently stands at 11 goals allowed back in 2015.

Currently ranked third in the state and fourth in the nation, you could make a case they should be even higher in those rankings, the Mustangs have been especially dominant at home this season with a perfect 9-0 record while not allowing a single goal. Since last season the Mustangs have not allowed a goal to be scored against them at home in 928 minutes.

While the defense continues to put up zeros on the scoreboard the Mustangs have put up crooked numbers on offense all season long with sophomore Jaylin Meza scoring a team-high 15 goals and freshman Dayana Hernandez scoring ten goals. Four others have scored at least five goals and 18 players in total have scored a goal as the Mustangs have scored a total of 72 goals and is averaging nearly a half a goal more per game this year compared to last year.

With a chance to witness history your next to last chance to see them play during the regular season will be on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m as the Mustangs face a Sacramento City team that they defeated last week on the road by a 6-0 score.

With the Big 8 Conference championship hopefully already clinched the Mustangs will end the regular season at home on Friday with a 3 p.m. game against Diablo Valley which will also be Sophomore Day.

Once the regular season comes to an end the Mustangs should be the top seed in the NorCal bracket and with that their path to another state championship will see them playing at home where they have not lost a game in over two years. Since their last home loss on Nov. 10, 2017 the Mustangs have gone 19-0-3 at home.

With plenty of record book rewriting still to be done this year's CCCAA soccer state championship will take place at De Anza College in Cupertino on Dec. 6 and 8.
