Program History

Michael Maroney Years (2008 – present)

Mike Maroney joined Delta College as the Men's Water Polo and Swim Coach in January 2008. Coach Maroney came to Delta from the University of the Pacific where he served as Aquatics Director and Head Men's Water Polo Coach from 2003-2008. He also was the Head Women's Water Polo/Physical Education Instructor at Hartwick College from 1999-2003. As a collegiate head coach, Maroney had compiled a 205 -175 record, including five seasons with 15 or more wins. Maroney was also named coach of the year on nine occasions (ECAC 2001, CWPA 1999 and 2000, USWP 2002 and 2005, and most recently Big 8 2013, 2014,2015, and 2016). He has also proudly coached 75 All-Americans and 133 All-Conference student athletes.

Since arriving at Delta, Maroney’s career record has grown to 395-321. His teams won four consecutive Big 8 Conference Championships from 2013-2016. His 2016 team was only the second team in school history to qualify for the State Championships, and placed 4th, which is the highest finish in school history. During the 2013-2016 stretch of Big 8 dominance, Delta earned MVP honors (Halva 2016, Ryan Morrissey 2015, Tim Urrea 2014, Jacob Castro 2013).

In 1999, Maroney earned his master's degree in education from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. He graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1993, where he received his bachelor's degree in sports sciences. While attending Pacific, he was an All-Big West Conference swimmer and water polo player. Before attending Pacific, Maroney was an All-American swimmer at Long Beach City College, where he also helped the water polo team win the 1988 State Championship with a perfect 32-0 record. Coach Maroney was an assistant on the USA National Jr. Team from 1996-1999, as well as the Head Men's & Women's Zone coach for the Southwestern Zone 1996-1999, and the Head Northeastern Women's Zone Coach from 2000-2003.

Maroney is a native of Baytown, Texas, has three children, Clay, Connor, & Tyler and reside in Stockton. Maroney competes in masters’ competition in both swimming and water polo. Maroney placed at the 2012 World Masters Swimming Championships in Riccione, Italy, and plays annually in the local master’s water polo leagues. All three of the Maroney boys’ have played for Delta College; Tyler (2014), Connor (20016-18), and Clay (2017).

The Larry Huiras Era (1984-2006)

Larry Huiras had a very successful career at Amos Alonzo Stagg HS before joining Bill Anttila here at Delta. First as Anttila's Assistant and later as Delta's Head Coach, Coach Huiras continued to focus on utilizing local Central Valley athletes as a foundation for building strong teams at the JC level. His Delta College teams earned conference championships in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1996, 1998, and 2002. The 1998 team was the first team in Delta history to make it to the State Championship Tournament. The 2002 team went undefeated in league, were named #3 in Northern California, and placed 8th at the State Tournament. In all the other years Huiras was at Delta, no team finished lower than third place. Larry has also been inducted into the Stockton Hall of Fame as well as the St. Mary's Hall of Fame.

The Bill Anttila Era (1948-1984)

USA Water Polo Hall of Famer Bill Anttila was not only the first Delta Water Polo Coach, he was the first ever coach of University of the Pacific. In those early years both College of the Pacific and Delta College (then called Stockton College) trained and played games together as one team. In 1947, Anttila came from the east coast after WW II and began a tremendous grass root movement of water polo in the central california valley. Many of today's referees, coaches, and contributors of water polo, all have ties to Coach Anttila's legendary program. From 1950-1983 Coach Antilla compiled a record of 498 wins and 243 losses. Coach Anttila has also coached two athletes at Delta College that have gone on to make the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame; Bob Gaughran and John Felix. Antilla was also the head men's swim coach at Delta from 1947-1967. Along with the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame, Coach Anttila was enshrined into the University of the Pacific, Springfield College, and Stockton Hall of Fames.
