STOCKTON — Delta College's women's basketball team is ranked No. 1 in Northern California, and now they have the signature win that leaves little doubt who rules the region at this point of the season.

The Mustangs hosted Diablo Valley, their Big 8 Conference rival, the defending state champions and who beat Delta three times last season. And after a few scary moments, the Mustangs delivered a convincing 101-81 victory on Friday at Joe Blanchard Gymnasium.

It was in many ways the type of game Delta coach Gina Johnson has come to expect from her squad — scoring in spurts, sharing the ball and wearing a team down.

"I like that we don't rely on any one person, in fact we don't have one all star," Johnson said. "Someone always picks it up and that's why I like this team. And they love sharing the ball."
