Swim season is in full effect

Swim season is in full effect

By Paul Muyskens

Like most spring sports that were interrupted during the 2020 season and then did not have a 2021 season the biggest thing that head coach Mike Maroney is looking forward to this swim season is simply "completing a season for swimming." "Our numbers are much smaller this season but it will be nice to reestablish a swim season," said Maroney as they will have a roster of about 30 swimmers and divers when that number is usually between 45-60 in years past. "We have a couple of kids that are sticking around for that third year to get their last swims in here at Delta." One of those is Julio Murguia who is not only sticking around for a chance to swim for a state title but doing it while also attending San Jose State which does not have a men's swimming program. "Julio was ranked No. 1, No. 2 in the state in all three of his events last season. We are excited to have him back." Murguia is mostly taking online classes in order to pull off attending two colleges at once in order to swim his final season at Delta College. While the depth is lacking on the men's side they will have slightly more depth on the women's side as they expect to have several swimmers contend for conference championships. "Natalie Johnston on the girls' side looks really tough and Tatem Stevenson should do well diving," said Maroney. Most of the athletes on the rosters of both teams are two-sport athletes who played water polo earlier this school year. "It's a different dynamic this year but I'm excited also for next year as the freshmen really learn how to win as individuals during this season and that really pays off for the team sports next fall. Some of these kids have been in the program for so many years and it's just exciting to see them stick around and contribute locally after everything they have been through."
