Softball season is here

As the weather starts to warm up the spring sports season is getting ready to start back at Delta College for the first time in nearly two years after their season came to an early end in 2020 and then did not happen in 2021. Going 14-7 before their season came to an end two seasons ago the Mustangs' softball team will have some familiar faces back that should help make things a little easier for head coach Jim Fisher to fill out his batting order. "It's just good to be back," said Fisher after a practice last week. "I don't know how we are going to be. There are so many question marks." While most teams will be entering the season with question marks the Mustangs will at least have several big bats back and they will be counted on to put up runs in bunches. Cheyenne Washington, Mikaela Ferreira, and Danyelle Godoy all return as the trio combined for 70 runs batted in through the 21 game season two years ago. Both captains on this year's team Ferreira and Washington were also both a part of the team in 2019 that made the state championships as Ferreira led that team with 53 runs batted in while Washington was fourth on that team with 43 runs batted in. There are also a few others back from two years ago like Krystal Walker, Dessa Zavala, and Catalina Mendoza "We have had some players step up and improve and they could be a factor this season after not really being one two years ago," said Fisher. While the offense will have several key bats back the pitching staff will have a few more question marks as Madison Nelson is back after pitching a third-best 23.2 innings two seasons ago. "We have five arms," said Fisher about his staff that has yet to be decided on the order. "Maddy had a lot of the innings in (20)20. Other than that everyone is new. We got better through fall. This group is a little more even. I'm hoping that someone steps up but right now they will all get a shot." The Mustangs will play a scrimmage tomorrow Friday, January 28th at 3:00 pm against Solano before opening the season on Friday, February 4th with home games against Sequoias and Cabrillo.
