Delta stays on top with Delta Classic title, SD Mesa jumps to #2 on CCCWVCA State Top 25

Some teams got knocked off their perch, others moved up but two teams are shaping up to be very hard to beat as of today, Sept. 11.

San Joaquin Delta held on to its #1 ranking by caputuring its Delta Classic championship for the first time in 15 years while San Diego Mesa is tops in the South and leaped to #2 on this week's CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings #2. 

  1. SAN JOAQUIN DELTA, Big 8, 8-0: The Mustangs went a perfect 4-0 to capture their first Delta Classic title since 2008. Delta swept Shasta and Cabrillo, then stopped Lassen's remarkable start-of-the-season win streak at 14 matches with another sweep in the semifinals. In the title match, Delta rallied from a set down to defeat Feather River in four games. Outside hitter Kiyah Irby earned MVP honors after hitting .427 and averaging 4.5 kills in the tourney. Also making all-tourney were OH Emily Vickers and setter Caprisa Brock.  NorCal #1; Last Week's Ranking: #1
  2. SAN DIEGO MESAPacific Coast Athletic, 9-0: The Olympians stayed undefeated by knocking off three previously undefeated teams, two who were ranked ahead of them a week ago. Mesa shot down Ventura and Irvine Valley in 4 each and then swept Cypress. Leading the way was SoCal points leader and OH Kailyn Jager, who earned a State Player of the Week #3 selection.   3. FEATHER RIVER, Golden Valley, 10-3: The Golden Eagles won a rubber match v. Sierra (now 2-1 v. the Wolverines and both wins sweeps) after ending Santa Rosa's 8-match win streak in four sets. FRC then swept Fresno in the semifinals before falling to host SJ Delta in the Delta Classic finals. Making All-Delta Classic tourney team were libero Katherine Gee (75 digs) and opposite Autumn Bennett (32 kills, 14 blocks). NorCal #2; Last Week's Ranking: #4
