San Joaquin Delta College’s Layla Carrasco Earns State and National Photojournalism Awards

San Joaquin Delta College student worker Layla Carrasco has achieved a remarkable double honor in photojournalism, earning awards at both state and national levels for her work with The Collegian, the college's student-run newspaper.

At the state level, Carrasco claimed First Place for Best News Photograph in the 2024 California College Media Association (CCMA) awards, competing against other two-year colleges throughout California. This prestigious award recognized her exceptional photographic work published during the 2024 calendar year. Nationally, Carrasco received Third Place in the News/Feature Photo category at the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) Spring National College Media Conference held in Long Beach, California on March 8, 2025. What makes this national achievement particularly impressive is that her work was evaluated against submissions from two-year and four-year institutions nationwide, placing her among the top collegiate photojournalists nationwide.

Carrasco's award-winning photography was featured in The Collegian's coverage of various campus events, including cultural celebrations like the Indigenous Peoples showcase that appeared on the cover of Issue 3 (October 25, 2024).

Much of the credit for Carrasco's success belongs to the supportive environment fostered at The Collegian, as well as her experience working and refining her skills as a student worker for all 21 athletic programs at Delta College. Layla has been a great asset for the Mustangs and her work is often displayed through social media and marketing materials.

Congratulations, Layla!
