Opening the season with a victory
Opening the season with a victory, the Mustangs' football team is off to a 1-1 start to the season and looking to make this season one of their best in quite some time.

"I'm always pushing them to achieve at a higher level," said long-time head coach Gary Barlow as the team is getting ready for their third game of the season." I will say they are progressing on a good curve. It's hard to say who's a standout. Aaron Jaimes Rodriguez is playing safety and he does a really good job for us. On the offensive side of the ball, Jaylen Pickens plays inside receiver for us and is doing a good job leading us."

After just one win last season the Mustangs wasted no time in picking up their first win of the season as Cruz Herrera passed for 184 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for a score during a 16-13 road win over Contra Costa. His one touchdown pass went to his twin brother, Alex Herrera, while Adrian Melesio also added a 37-yard field goal which ended up being the game-winner.

"We put a lot on the quarterback's shoulders in terms of decision making and he has responded really well," said Barlow about his quarterback who played at nearby St. Mary's High School.

Last weekend the Mustangs dropped their home opener by a 16-13 final score.

"I'm really happy with the direction the team is moving in. I think we feel like we left some opportunities out there this past Saturday and it was a good learning opportunity."

"They work hard together in the weight room, they work hard together on the field, they are bonded and it's a good group to work with.  It just feels good for us all to get back to some sort of normal routine."

Their home games this season are played at McNair High School and the Mustangs' next home game is this Saturday at 1 pm against Sequoias.
