While some sports have had their hopes of having a 2020-21 season come to an end the Mustangs' softball team is still holding out some hope that they will get the opportunity to play during California Community College Athletic Association Spring II season currently scheduled to start in April.

"I think we have an outside chance at playing," said head coach Jim Fisher about his team that last took the field for a game on March 13, 2020. "We had just started to get things going before being shut down" as they finished the 2019-20 season with a 14-7 record and their hopes of a third straight state championship tournament appearance came to an end. During the previous two seasons, the Mustangs went 66-26 and finished fourth overall in the state in 2019.

"We kind of took the last bus out of town knowing that it was likely our last game. A day or two later we had a meeting and were told that was it. It hasn't been easy for some of my players as the opportunity to play softball was a major reason why they went to school."

Things have been limited with the program this season as they had two weeks of conditioning back in November but nothing since outside of periodic zooms which have been tough to pull off with everyone all over the place.

"I had a player tell me, "Two years ago I hated coming here and now I don't want to leave", and the players once they come here realize how special of a place this is. They are not just a number."

One of those players wanting to return despite having other options after a great first season with the Mustangs is Mikaela Ferriera who was named a California Junior College All-American after the 2018-19 season and after having the 2019-20 season cut short was set to return this season.

"Not only is going to Delta the cheapest way to continue going to school but the academics and athletics at the school are top-notch," said Fisher who has been the head coach for the program since 2009. "Delta is such a unique experience and a special place."

Eventually, sports will return, and more student-athletes will have the opportunity to learn how special of a place San Joaquin Delta College is.
