Delta Women dominate Redwoods

STOCKTON For another team, a four-point halftime lead might be cause for concern.

For the Delta College women's basketball team, the top-ranked community college squad in the state, it was just another night on the court.

The Mustangs defeated College of the Redwoods 78-46 on Saturday at Blanchard Gym to win their third Northern California title. It was Delta's 22nd consecutive win heading into next week's state tournament at West Hills College in Lemoore.

"I'm super excited for this team," said head coach Gina Johnson. "They've been coming back all year. The play for each other."

Freshman point guard Sarah Ruiz said the Mustangs (29-1) played with chips on their shoulders and are proud of it. She said Johnson advised the players to treat the NorCal final like any other game, having confidence in their abilities to keep rolling.

"As a team we know we have each other's backs," Ruiz said. "Without each other we can't do anything."

Delta led 17-6 after the first quarter, allowing Redwoods just a basket and four free throws.
