Finally back in Joseph Blanchard Gymnasium

If you follow the Delta College women's basketball team on Instagram, @DeltaWBBall, it is hard to not notice the happy faces of both the players and coaches to finally be back in Joseph Blanchard Gymnasium and working together as they look to take care of some unfinished business in 2021-22.

The 2019-20 season ended with the Mustangs riding a 22-game winning streak and potentially three wins away from a state championship before Covid-19 canceled the rest of the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs.

With the 2020-21 season canceled as well, the team has recently been able to start practicing again as a team and start to really look forward to a 2021-22 season that will hopefully see things return back to normal.

'They were really excited to be able to work out together," said head coach Gina Johnson about being able to start to have team practices. "For some of them, it was hard to be able to practice and train as they needed with a lack of access to a gym like they have now."

"This is the normal time to kind of look forward to next season. Summer workouts are around the corner and before you know it it's fall. I think it is a little easier right now for time to kind of pass fast and before we know it it is fall. We are moving forward and scheduling games and planning to have a full season in the fall."

Currently, most of the team that missed out on this season is planning to come back and they will be bolstered by an impressive incoming freshman class as well to make the team even stronger. While it won't be the same team the Mustangs once they retake the court will be coming off a 29-1 season that had many feeling like they were the favorites to cut down the nets and win the state title.

"It's almost going to be almost two years since our last loss, December 6th, 2019, and I think there is definitely an attitude of some unfinished business. I feel it as a coach. We had such a special group and it makes you hungry. You want to get back to that and have that special season. It challenges me to get this group back to that point."

November can not come soon enough for this team.
